Author. Or trying, anyway.

S.E. Crane

A feathered dragon with a set of long, grey antlers. Its feathers are mostly white, with the tips of its wings and tails steeped in red.

S.E. Crane (also known as Taff or Tafferling) writes mostly romance wrapped in adventure and soul-harnessing magic. She has a weak spot for post-apocalyptic settings and yet strives to write stories that are filled with hope.

Aphelion

Aphelion is a science-fantasy web serial, with soul-harnessing magic and tech, a cyberpunk and space opera flair, and a slow burn simmering away in the middle of a dystopian zombie apocalypse. Its first book, The City of a Billion Stolen Souls, is completed.

It can be read for free on Archive of Our Own, as well as on Campfire. Or you can buy the paperback on Amazon to support the author. She’d be delighted.

The cover of Aphelion, a dystopian sci-fi novel. It depicts a wall filled with the crayon scribbles of children, innocent in their joy. You see a colourful dragon, a stick man fighting stick-zombies with glowing eyes with nothing but a sword, flowers, and a small cat. A bloody hand print sits in the bottom left corner and blood pools underneath. A glowing cat, her fur the colour of cinnamon, is stretching up to touch the wall, a paw resting on the dragon.

In a world where tech runs off the concept of one’s soul and where dragons steady cosmic scales, heroes are shaped in the shadow of an ancient grudge.

Horizon’s Crown was an Earther triumph; a stage at the frontier of the settled systems, a city of hope and dreams and infinite potential.
     Then one man bit another.

Now, under the watchful eye of its orbital island, it straddles the line between dead and dying; a city of nightmares and endless sorrow.

Varrett Vild Vickers belongs into a pilot’s chair. He’s meant to dodge asteroids, to race dragons, not chase credits so he can pay rent while HC’s major demographic clicks its teeth at him and tries to eat his face off. But it’s fine. Really. He copes.

Or that’s what he tells himself, all the way until a woman falls from the sky and turns his already upside-down life very sharply sideways.

Armed with nothing but her worst-kept secret and a ledger of lies, Sophya Soulwright tricks her way into Horizon’s Crown, looking for not only her sister, but for redemption and a meaning to a life she’s never held dear.

What she finds instead is a city trying its hardest to live, and a man who courts death every step of the way. He’s infuriating, tireless, and after a glitch binds their souls together, he is now stuck with her.

Dying Light

I have been relentlessly working on a Dying Light fic since 2016, which has grown into a five-book series at this point and shows no sign of stopping.
